Introduction
If you are visiting our website, you are either a supporter of those afflicted with this disease, or you have a loved one who has been diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s disease or another form of early-onset dementia. (See our “The Disease “page for more info.)
For those who are supporting us, we thank you and hope that you will share our website with others, especially across social media. It seems that these days, everyone knows someone who has been affected by dementia. Sadly, every year, there are more people being diagnosed with early-onset dementia than the year before.
My wife Kimmy was diagnosed in March 2012 after seven months of testing for various illnesses. Our kids were just 8 and 4 when testing started. In 2015, I had to place my wife into assisted living, and by 2017 Kimmy was moved to a skilled nursing facility. For the past three years, Kimmy has been on full care and wheelchair-bound. She cannot speak or communicate.
We hope that by sharing our story, and all that we have experienced, we can provide some level of comfort and support for those families who are caring for a loved one. As we grow as a nonprofit, we intend to be able to offer financial aid to families battling this disease.
Please feel free to reach out to me/us through our email: info@lovingkimmy.org
We also invite you to follow us and subscribe to our blog so that you will have access to our posts and educational forums.
The most important thing I can share with you right off the bat is this:
More than 50% of the time, someone who is a caregiver for a loved one with dementia will experience some form of the medical issue before the person they are caring for does. Meaning…learn how to take care of yourself. Find a support group or therapist that can give you a place to vent. Find a way to take breaks…for your own mental and physical health!
