Aphasia caused by Early Onset Dementia

The recent news about actor Bruce Willis being diagnosed with “Aphasia” brought me back to the early days of Kimmy’s illness. Kimmy had been having trouble finding words. She could no longer write in cursive and could not balance her check book. Kimmy would get lost just a mile from our house while driving our kids home from a birthday party.

At the suggestion of some of her family, we made an appointment with her gynecologist, thinking that perhaps her issues were related to menopause or stress. After listening to Kimmy and I describe what difficulties she was having, the doctor stated that what Kimmy was experiencing was called “Aphasia’s”. Specifically, she had a speech aphasia and a visual-spacial aphasia. He said, “These are not caused by menopause. I think Kim needs to see a neurologist.” Then, staring at me outside of her view, he added, ”Just as soon as you can”!

That moment was a pivotal moment in my view of what path Kimmy was heading down. There was a sudden reality that something serious was affecting with Kimmy.

In the article below, you will learn that aphasia is often caused by a stroke, brain damage, or brain tumor. However, there is a form of aphasia called Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) which is caused by or is a result of degeneration of brain tissue in the area of the brain that controls language. Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) is the most common form of dementia associated with PPA.
